Registered letter to the United States dated January 29, 1920
(Latest known usage of the R5 handstamp)
This cover to the US is franked with an SG2 2 cent stamp, an SG5 8 cent stamp and an SG6 10 cent stamp, paying the 10 cent registered letter fee and the 10 cent Treaty Port/UPU rate. The stamps are cancelled with two R4 Index A registration handstamps and an R5 standard handstamp. The R5, according to Norton and Schoenfeld, was replaced by the R5a during the period August 14, 1920 to November 2, 1921. Until now the latest known usage of the R5 prior to the introduction of the R5a was on October 22, 1919, but the usage on this cover pushes this date forward by over three months. |
